  • Exchange 2007 transition - Public Folders Unavailable

I have been working on transitioning from Exchange 2003 to 2007. Our 2007 Exchange machines are installed on Windows 2008 64-bit OS and Exchange is at sp1.

I moved over a few mailboxes to test things out and as far as I can remember, the public folders were working at that time. I'm not 100% sure, though.

When I started working with a vendor to get their archive product to work correctly we noticed that public folders were inaccesible on the mailboxes that have been moved over to the new exchange server. The only thing that I can remember working on between the time that I thought PF were working and when I noticed that they were not, was the SSL cert for OWA.

I've attached an image of the error that I get in the Outlook client when I try to expand the PF. It just says, Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange computer is down for maintenance.

Thanks for any insight and assistance,
    ~Tracie

    Are PF accessible thru owa?

the mailbox users who are still on E2K3, are they able to xs PF ?

If you create a new user on E2K7, are they able to xs PF?

By default in E2K7 you don't have PF store. You need to create one. But i assume even after moving the mailbox users on E2K7 would be able to xs PF on E2K3.

Well, I was surprised to see that the PF are accessible via OWA, but they are not current.

Users on Exch 2k3 are still able to access PF. And a new user created on the 2k7 server is not able to access PF in Outlook.

There is a PF store on the mailbox server that was created when the I installed Exchange. I have set up each of the PFs on 2K3 to sync with the PF on 2k7.

      Thanks,

I figured out the problem. I have 2 mailbox servers and had shut off the PF store on one of them. When I mounted that store (which is the same server where my mailbox was that was not accessing PFs) I was able to access all PF again. After they all synched back up, the data was current in OWA as well.

so, you have to have a PF store on each mailbox server?

        Thanks,

In theory, Outlook will look for public folders that are not on its local server.
However in practise I find that it does not.
Furthermore, if you are using Outlook 2003 then you need a public folder store on each Mailbox Server.

As such, I tend to replicate all public folders to all mailbox servers. Then I don't have to worry about where they are.

              Its buried on Technet somewhere.

Lets put it this way, I have tried to deploy MBX role only, without public folders on each store, and Outlook 2003 didn't work properly. Added the PF store, replicated the system folders, and it worked fine.
