  • Exchange 2007 and Backup Exec 11d

I am hoping someone out there can help me out with this issue. I am trying to have a full backup of my E2007 First and Second Storage groups but unfortunately it fails using Backup Exec 11d.

Does Exchange 2007 require any special configurations to backup the mailbox and public folders?

This is the error message I get in Symantec Backup Exec 11:

Backup- \\conexch02.Company.local\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group
V-79-57344-33928 - Access Denied. Cannot backup directory Mailbox Database and its subdirectories.

Backup- \\conexch02.Company.local\Microsoft Information Store\Second Storage Group
V-79-57344-33928 - Access Denied. Cannot backup directory Public Folder Database and its subdirectories.

I tried clicking on the links but I couldn't find any useful information. Any help would be great.

What account is the Backup Exec services running under?
If it is a special account for Backup Exec (which it should be) what permissions does it have?
If it is not Domain Admin, does it have permissions with Exchange ?

Not sure what you mean by what account is Backup Exec services is running under but when I checked the BackupExec service on my E2007 server, it is log on as local account.

The backup exec user account in AD is part of the following groups: domain admin, exchange admin, Exchange domain server, backup operators

I haven't seen Backup Exec 11 for a while, but the services should be running under a specific account, unless Symantec have changed their best practises. Not local system.

We also have a Exchange 2003 machine and that is backing up properly. The services for that machine is also running on local system.

FYI, our exchange 2007 environment is not set up with LCR or CCR. Is that required to backup an E2007 mailbox?

Re: Exchange 2007 and Backup Exec 11d

You do not need to implement any of the replication technologies to backup Exchange using an Exchange aware backup application. The error that you have posted is a pure permissions error. You need to go through what permissions the application has. There are articles on the Symantec support site on setting the permissions for Exchange 2007 backup.

I was on your site and saw this link:

              http://www.shudnow.net/2007/07/19/ba...2007-problems/

Does the backupexec account need to have a mailbox in Exchange 2007?

Currently the backupexec account has a mailbox in Exchange 2003.

Re: Exchange 2007 and Backup Exec 11d

The only reason you have needed access to the mailboxes with the account in previous versions is to do brick level backup of the mailbox content. That isn't a feature in 11d, it does it in another way, so I doubt if it is required.

There should be a document on the Symantec web site on what permissions are required. I haven't used backup Exec for some time, I got fed up with their price increases and tend to put Backup Assist everywhere now.

Re: Exchange 2007 and Backup Exec 11d

Just went through this myself. Turns out 11d is not compatible with Exchange 2007 from what the Symantec Support rep told me. Luckily I had a service agreement with them and was able to upgrade to 12.5 for free. I found this odd because 11d has Exchange 2007 options so as to why it's not compatible I am not sure, but nevertheless my backups are working now.
