  • Please help in Migrating Exchange 5.5 > 2003 >2007 In CCR Clutser

    Hello Guys,

Recently, I have migrated our NT 4.0 Domain to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Domain and Introduced Exchange 2003 Standard Edition to the Exisiting Exchange 5.5 successfuly. I'm able to move the mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003.

The next step is to move all the mailboxes to the Exchange 2003 and uninstalling the Last Exchange 5.5 from our Organization.

Now, if I want to build the New Exchange Server 2007 in cluster Mode, how can I do that?

    Option 1:

    1. Building an Exchange 2003 Cluster Setup.
    2. Moving all the Mailboxes from Single Exchange 2003 To the Cluster Exchange 2003
    3. Decomission the Single Exchange 2003
    4. Transitioning from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 in cluster setup or Single Setup????????????
    5. Moving all mailboxes fom Cluster Exchange 2003 to Cluster Exchange 2007 "If point number 4 fuilfuilled"
    6. Uninstalling Exchange 2003

    Option 2:

    1. Transitioning from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 in Single Server.
    2. Moving all the Mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007
    3. Modifiying the Routing Groups and the SMTP connector.
4 .Replicate all the public folder and make sure that no Error events occures.
5 .Uninstalling the Exchange 2003 from the Oranization.

    Option 3:

    1. Building 2 Cluster Node with the Majority Node Set for Exchange CCR
    2. Installing Exchange Mailbox Roles on the 2 Nodes and test Failover.
    3. Then, moving the Mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to the Active Node withing the Cluster
    4. Uninstalling Exchange 2003

    Option 4:

    1. Transitioning from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 in Single Server Mode
    2. Moving all the Mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007
    3. Modifying the Routing Group and SMTP connector.
    4. Uninstalling Exchange 2003 from the Organization
    5. Building New Cluster Node for Exchange 2007 with the MNS
    6. Test Failover within the Cluster
7.Moving Mailboxes from Single Exchange 2007 to Cluster Exchange 2007

Which is the correct option i should go with?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

Once you're completely migrated to Exchange 2003, and you've removed all remnants of 5.5, then option #3 is appealing. Keep in mind you'll need other server(s) handling the Client Access Server and Hub Transport roles, since those can't go on your CCR solution.

Re: Please help in Migrating Exchange 5.5 > 2003 >2007 In CCR Clutser

      Hello Sir,

Okay, it means after I get rid of my Exchange 5.5 Servers and alive with only Exchange 2003 Server:
      1. PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions
      2. PrepareSchema
      3. PrepareAD
      4. PrepareDomain
      1. Prepare an Exchange Server to host the Hub and CAS roles
      2. Building a CCR Mailbox
      3. Moving Legacy mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007
      4. Uninstalling Exchange 2003 Legacy from the Organization

      Or:

Do the preparation for the Exchange 2007
Installing Exchange 2007 with the CAS, HUB, and Mailbox Roles
Moving all the Legacy Mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007
      Decommission Exchange 2003
      Building a Mailbox Cluster CCR
Moving the Mailboxes to the new CCR

What you think? is it worth and less headache to go with this setup, or going directly with second option where will CCR?

      Thanks for your reply

      Regards,
