  • Offline Address Book

    Hi,

I have a query regarding the Offline Address book in Exchange 2007 that i'm hoping you might be able to clarify for me.

We have a mix of Outlook clients accessing Exchange, the majority are Outlook 2003 and we also have a few Outlook 2007 clients.

When i check the properties of the OAB in Exchange, all options in the Client Support section are ticked. Enable Web-based distribution is not selected.

How does this affect Outlook 2007? Because Outlook 2003 SP2 or later is selected in Client options, does this include Outlook 2007 as well?

    Thanks
    Matt

    Re: Offline Address Book

Outlook 2007 is fully backwards compatible. Therefore if you are not using web based distribution then it will use the public/system folder system that Outlook 2003 uses.

Ah, i see. Thanks for your reply. If i then enable web-based distribution, do the Outlook 2007 clients use web based distribution by default automatically?

Another quick question for you. If Outlook is running in cached mode, is it correct that Outlook uses the OAB it has downloaded rather than querying a GC for the GAL? The reason i ask is that if i update the GAL on the server, the clients don't see the new user or update until the day after. I'm assuming this is because it needs to download the OAB again?

        Re: Offline Address Book

If web distribution is enabled then the clients will use it. Nothing needs to be changed from your side. However you cannot use web distribution exclusively unless you have removed all previous versions of Outlook.

The behaviour you are seeing with the OAB is normal.
