  • EMC 2007 - slow

    All,

I'm implementing Exchange 2007 in my org and one of the things that I have noticed is how slow the Exchange Management Console is to open a mailbox property. It sometimes takes upward of 2 minutes. In some cases I've actually had to "kill" the process because it was non-responsive. My helpdesk specialists are having a terrible time with it when they want to edit the properties of a user.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance,

    Pat

since the EMC is basically a GUI shell to Powershell, I suspect brushing up on your typing / scripting might be a good idea

I have heard of (but not tried) something called PowerGUI which is a half way house between EMC and PowerShell

      Re: EMC 2007 - slow

What do you mean by mailbox opening slow?

The actual console is very slow to start, but that is a problem with MMC 3.0. I actually remarked to someone in Microsoft to take the person who designed MMC 3.0 out in to a car park and give them a good kicking, because it is fine on Windows XP, just runs like a dog on 2003.

However if the console is running, I haven't seen any performance issues with choosing the properties of a user account/mailbox. Certainly not two minute type delays or having to kill the process.

PowerGui is very good, and free (http://www.powergui.org/) and is part of my standard build list for Exchange 2007 servers.

        Re: EMC 2007 - slow

thanks for the input. The problem is occuring in the EMC when I open the properties of a mailbox. I do agree with you that I would take that person out and beat him profusely as well.

I've run the EMC on both XP, 2003, and Vista. they all seem to do the same thing.

I will look into the powergui and see what it can do for me.

        best regards,

        Pat

          Re: EMC 2007 - slow

I haven't seen any performance issues once the console is running, it is just the console startup that is slow. I am using the console most of the day, every day and if there was a problem I would soon notice.
Therefore I would have to say it is something with your environment. Something running on the workstations that is causing it to be slow. If it happens on all machines then the finger would be pointed at AV, particularly if it is Symantec.
