  • Outlook Losing Connection With Exchange 2007

I have something similer happening to one user after migrating his account to our new Exchange 07 server. It constantly prompts him to login and comes up as trying to login as mailserver\user instead of domain\user. Mail service works fine but frequently causes him not to be able to see free/busy info when scheduling appointments which he does quite a bit of. I've removed his Outlook profile, re-added it, uninstalled and reinstalled Office, 03 by the way, with no difference. I'm no Exchange expert, but didn't see anything obvious in the management console.
It seems Outlook goes offline, or can't reach the server for other than mail and dosn't retain or use his domain credentials to which he is logged into his workstation with.
Sorry to hijack, but after an hour of Google'ing, this is the closest I could find to the issue.

We also use SEP, and after getting it to stop stopping shares on our file/print server, hasn't been too bad.

Alas, a hijack is a hijack, so I have split the post out to its own thread. Furthermore you are referring to Exchange 2007, which has many differences in its architecture to Exchange 2003. So your post has been moved to a new thread in the Exchange 2007 forum.

Re: Outlook Losing Connection With Exchange 2007

I have a quite similar problem, which I solved by rebooting the mail server.

It's a relatively new enrironment with Exchange 2007. It's been humming along for 1-2 months, but just this week a bunch of users (Outlook 2007 - no 2003 ones left) started getting prompted for their username and password - "connecting to mailserver.domain.local" type of prompt.

The odd thing is the prompt can be ignored. You can just close the box and send / receive as normal. If you enter the username and password, it will come back up every minute or so, whether or no you select "

As a side note, we also use SEP. I did try disabling Outlook integration, to no avail. Tried restarting the Exchange services - all of them - to no avail. Finally, I rebooted the server, which did the trick. I am still rather curious as to why this was happening.

SEP as in symantec endpoint protection?
I would kill the teefer driver on the NIC to see if that helps.

Also make sure you have the latest NIC drivers. I had to stop the tcp v4 large send offload too.
        cheers

It is really important that you state what the host OS is. I have heard there might be a bug in certain circumstances with Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008, around the Outlook Anywhere feature. Not confirmed yet though.

Simon, this is Exchange 2007 SP1 on top of Windows 2008, 2008 native domain. All clients are Windows XP / Office 2007. One thing I did try was disabling the Outlook Anywhere within Outlook client. I will disable it on the server as well since we don't need it.

@andy - Yes - Symantec Endpoint Protection. What issue were you having that you had to stop the Segmentation offload? That was just on the server, correct?

For Windows 2008/Exchange 2007 SP1 ONLY, if you are getting repeated authentication prompts, try this from an elevated command prompt.

              %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config /section:system.webServer/security/authentication/windowsAuthentication /useKernelMode:false

(may have wrapped, so be careful - it is on line)

              and reboot.

              Simon.

OK The problem recurred, so I disabled kernel-mode auth. We'll see if it pops up again.

BTW Simon, thanks for your blog posts on UC / single-name certificates on Exchange 2007 - it proved very helpful, I'm sure for others as well.
