  • Exchange 2007 migration to another server and placement in a Data Center

    Hi,

This is my first time posting on this site.

I am looking for help in migrating an existing Exchange 2007 server with about 100 mailboxes to another server and then placing the new server in a Data Center where I would be putting another DC with GC that would replicate with the one in the main office. We have a P2P setup between the data center and the office with 2 T1's bonded together for a total of 3Mb. Any thoughts on the best way to make this work.

I was first going to setup a new DC at the data center and use Sites and Services in AD to replicate between the two DCs.

I then was going to load Exchange 2007 onto another new server and then create a couple of mailboxes on there for testing purposes and then copy the mailbox store from the first server to the second.

I don't know if it is possible to keep the first Exchange 2007 server as a backup Exchange server with replication.

The DCs would be running Windows Server 2003 R2 SE and the Exchange 2007 Servers would be running Windows 2003 R2 SE x64 Edition.

I have never done this before so if someone has a document or link with instructions then that would be great.

    Thanks,

    Mike

As it is a new server I would just swing the data to the new server. Build the new server on site, replicate the public folders and then use Move Mailbox to move the mailboxes to the new server. Then physically move the server to the data centre.

As for replicating the data, that isn't possible without using some of the clustering technology. However that will require an additional server.

Thanks for the info. Is there anything specific that I need to worry about as far as setting it up in the Data Center and making it part of the local network in the office besides setting up a new Domain Controller???

Not really, but without intimate knowledge of your network I wouldn't like to say. Your best option would be to engage a consultant with Active Directory design experience as that is what Exchange uses even more so now.
