  • Blank E-mails

    Hi All,

History... We have upgraded our exchange 2003 server and outlook 2003 clients to Exchange 2007 sp1 and Outlook 2007. A fresh install on new hardware, migrated mailboxes across. Server platform (separate Edge, CAS and a Mailbox servers) all running Windows Server 2008.

A few days after going live we discovered an issue where if certain clients replied to a message, we would receive a completely blank body. Subject is there etc but no body. This also seems to be the case with some new incoming emails - the body it just blank (note these are all HTML E-mails). If I open the email and click on Actions >View in browser, then the email can be viewed. It is also visible via OWA. One odd thing is some (not all) of the e-mails are fine in Outlook 2003 but not viewable in Outlook 2007.

To double check it was our system, I had a client e-mail my exchange account and my Gmail account. Exchange was blank and Gmail was fine! I believe we have turned off all the filtering on the edge server but not sure if we have missed something which may be removing the body of HTML E-mails

Any ideas? If you need more information on the system setup please let me know.

Ps thanks for reading this post.

    Re: Blank E-mails

What else is on the system?
That problem is usually caused by anti virus or antispam software scanning something it shouldn't.

Thank for the reply... I know they should but none of our exchange servers (edge, CAS, Mailbox server) have antivirus software insttalled However the client computers do use symantec. Not 100% it is symantec but look into.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

      Thanks

I operate a simple policy. When Symantec is involved, that is the cause of the problem until proven otherwise. In most cases it is the cause of any problems with email flow and I suggest that it is removed and replaced with something that works.

Have you checked the firewall for SMTP scanning functionality?
Something is scanning the messages and not putting them back correctly so that they can be read by Outlook. That is usually AV, Antispam or a firewall.

                Re: Blank E-mails

I logged a call with Microsoft support and there exchange guys are now looking into it.... tried a few Hotfixes with no joy.

now enabled pipeline tracing & Outlook 2007 client logging, now we have the joy of looking over the logs

I'll update the post with the fix once Microsoft have resolved the problem.
