the question was whether to give it a hostname belonging to the internal domain, or the external one

I might be wrong there, but the edge transport server is not a domain member, so it might be safe to assume it should have the internet-resolvable fqdn.
but lets wait for the exch07 experts, I?ve only been reading about it up to now

I'm not an exchange expert but as DYasny says, Edge servers aren't domain members so you should shy away from anything that resembles the internal naming structure on them. As it is also installed into a DMZ there is no reason to have it as a public name either so just a basic hostname is fine. DNS externally resolves the MX record to itI like to remove obvious names so I wouldn't necessarily go with exch-edg but that is more personal choice than specific requirements.

          Re: Edge Server Naming

The physical name of the server doesn't matter one bit.
Use a name that matches whatever you use internally.

However you will need to set a FQDN to the machine before Exchange 2007 will install. Again that doesn't really matter a great deal as the important information for FQDN can be set on the Connectors.
