  • Active Directory and MS Exchange 2007 on the same server

    Hello !

I am planning upgrade of existing network (one domain controller - W2k3 Standard) with
linux-based mail server to MS Exchange 2007. I understand that the best option possibly
would be to install the second domain controller and a separate server for MS Exchange 2007.
Unfortunately, we can't afford to buy two new servers and it looks like I will need to buy only
one, but powerful, 64-bit server to use it as the second DC (Windows 2003 Server Standard 64-bit) and MS Exchange 2007(Hub Transport Server Role, Mailbox Server Role and Client Access Server Role).
The network is very small (20 users). Could you please confirm that this configuration
will work ? Is there any obvious problems with this design ?

    thank you,
    Mihail

    Hi,

I am not able to undestand why you are making new hardware as DC and installing exchange 2007 on it,

since user volume is not so high then make new hardware as exchange box only and your existing DC will take care of domain part.

2 DCs are better than 1 usually but generally it isn't recommended to install Exchange on a DC.
      Which to choose?
Personally I think I would bite it and have a second DC but would be interested in others thoughts?
      cheers

Why you are not thnking of SMALL BUSINESS SERVER?

20 users a box with AIO should do the work!

Possibly because SBS is currently only in the 2003 incarnation, and he may want the benefits of Exchange 2007. sadly we have to wait until September 2008 probably, for Cougar ( SBS2008 ) to come out.
          Best wishes,

Yes, the reason why we're not thinking about SBS2003 is because we would like to start using MS Exchange 2007.
As I understood, there are no any obvious issues with installing Exchange 2007 on the second DC.

            thank you for your ideas!
