  • Email sent to wrong addresses

This one is very strange. We are using Exchange 2007, and the particular user is on Outlook 2007. He sent an email to an external address outside of the domain. Well, the email went to the correct address, but it also went to two other addresses inside of our domain. Upon looking in his sent emails, only the correct address is shown. One of the users that the email went to incorrectly said this has happened 3 times in the past couple of months, and it has happened when sending to different addresses. We have an Exchange expert looking into things right now, but so far he hasn't found anything. I checked his mailbox at the Outlook level, and there are no rules set up. He has two delegates, but everything is correct there.

    Has anyone seen this before?

    What does message tracking show?
Does it show the messages going via another user?

Rules or delegates are the only places I would be looking.

Re: Email sent to wrong addresses

      Thanks for your reply.

When I checked message tracking I actually found another user that the email had been sent to. The other two incorrect sends that we knew about didn't even show up in message tracking. So the email basically went to 3 other people that he didn't send it to, that we know of. This is one of our financial advisors, so you can see how much of a problem this is.

What could possibly be going on?

We figured it out. Apparently he had Bcc'd one of our distribution lists, and the tech that had checked his sent items didn't recognize it. Thanks for your help.

It had to be something like that - Exchange simply does not send email to other people on its own. It was either a rule, a delegate or something where the other users were listed.
