  • Two critical exchange services fail to start after exchange 2007 install

I have a new Exchange 2007 server running on windows 2003 which I just finished applying SP1 to, however still after each reboot there are event logs and the System Attendant and Information Store services do not start. The event ID is 4001 in the application event log. Both services will start manually.

A transient failure has occurred. The problem may resolve itself in awhile. The service will retry in 56 seconds. Diagnostic information:

Re: Two critial exchange services fail to start after exchange 2007 install

If it is a new build I would be looking to rebuild the machine completely (after removing Exchange). I work on the simple basis that a new installation should start cleanly the first time it is booted up, if it does not and there are no obvious errors, then it is removed, the machine wiped and it is rebuilt.

Did you apply SP1 separately to the main install? Any reason for that? SP1 is the complete installation, you do not have to install RTM and then update it.

System Attendant is the part of Exchange that communicates with the domain controllers, therefore errors with SA usually point to a connectivity issue. DNS servers are the prime candidates - the DNS servers should be internal only - no external DNS servers in the network configuration at all.

Re: Two critical exchange services fail to start after exchange 2007 install

When services do not start automatically but start manually properly, it is usually a dependency that is not specified properly.

I believe this is a common Exchange 2k7 issue as well. Google it a bit and see how many people have the same problem..
