  • Rename Exchange2007 Machine

Following installation of Exchange 2007 and migration of mailboxes from Ex2003 - and retirement of the old server, I would now like to RENAME the Exchange 2007 server so that all references throughout our domain are preserved.

Am I courting disaster?? Can you point me towards instructions on how to accomplish this?

    Any help is sincerely appreciated.

You can't rename the server while Exchange is installed... unless you want to test your disaster recovery procedures. It will break your Exchange deployment.

The only way you can rename that server is to move all the data to another server - using Exchange procedures - not just moving the databases. Then remove Exchange correctly using add/remove programs. Drop the machine from the domain, wipe it, rebuild and give it the new name. Reinstall Exchange and then move all the data back.

Is the name that important to you?

If the network is setup with care, the real name of the server doesn't matter.

Thank you for your response... I'm not surprised by your comments and, actually, my gut was telling me that I probably couldn't get away with the name change. I just have to trace through the references and firewall settings to make the transition to the new server.

      Thanks again..

Not sure if it would work, but have you tried creating an A record for the old DNS name for your old exchange server and point it to the IP of the new exchange?

            Re: Rename Exchange2007 Machine

There are various tricks that you can do to get traffic that was destined for the old server to point to the new server. For example changing the DNS records manually and then adding a NETBIOS alias to the machine. However those can only be done once the old server has been completely removed.

In a well designed network trying to use the same machine name is not required. I never use the machine's real name for anything. If I need to have machines using Exchange for SMTP traffic then I use a DNS name - mail.domain.com which points to the Exchange server. At no point is there a machine on the network with the name "mail".

Or let me put it another way - I have never needed to consider renaming a machine to maintain full functionality.
