  • some junk in my outgoing queue

    Hey all,

I have installed exchange 2007 successfully and i'm confident that it is not an open relay. However, from time to time, I can see some junk email in my queue. I'm not sure what happens with it but it just disappears at some point or I just delete it.

All of the messages that I say are junk, have all sorts of delivery errors related to them and it doesn't look like they are going anywhere. However, what about the messages that might have been sent from me and i'm not aware of?

Is it normal to have a certain amount of junk in your queue?

    Thanks,

    Tamir.

It is normal, but you can try minimize it using Recipient filtering (look under "Anti-spam configuration"):

Re: some junk in my outgoing queue

hi and thanks for your reply,

belive it or not, I just realized now (from your reply) that you can enable IMF on exchange 2007. I thought you can do it only with an edge transport server. so thanks for that!

now.... the only thing I don't understand is this. If my mail server is not an open relay, how do I end up with even 1 junk email in my outgoing queue? how can anyone even try to send an email to an outside user from my exchange server in the first place?

I'm really confused... Please shed some light on this for me.

      Tamir.

ok so I think I can answer this myself:

spammers send emails to addresses that don't exists in my organization. then my exchange server tries to answer them saying that the address doesn't exist. however, the original sender address doesn't exist either so it gets stuck in the queue.

        I think that's it.

        Tamir.

P.S.- I'm working on the recepient filtering as well.

            Just a quick update:

I ticked the "don't accept mail for addresses that don't exist in the global address list" and my queues are clean as.

            rock n roll.
