  • OAB Error (0x8004010F) when synchronizing Outlook 2007/2003

I am getting error 0x8004010F when synchronizing any Outlook client with Exchange Server 2007. I have looked this up in many places and it seems to be a problem with the Offline Address Book. Does anybody know how to fix this issue? The first storage group mailbox database has the correct settings pointing to the default offline address book. However, in other forums I came accross a lot of people suggesting using ADSIEdit.msc to give users the msExchUseOAB property, but nowhere do I find good instructions to do that. Any suggestions would be great.

    Thank you.

Are you logged into Windows on the Client with the account who owns the mailbox? If not, this is never going to work without some pretty awkward grubbing around (I don't have it working yet).

Actually, I am trying to accomplish this by using Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTPS.) Outlook 2007 gives me the error and tells me there is an object missing when synchronizing.

Yes. But which account are you logged into the mailbox with?

Oh, I understand your question now... I am logged in with the account of the owner of the mailbox.

Hmmm... last time I got this I was logged in with my Admin Account and the mailbox was owned by my Humble account. The time before however, I had to move the mailbox from one server to another (if there is only one server move it to another mailbox store). You can move it back if you like but it's unnecessary from the POV of the problem. Make sure the client is logged out while the mailbox is moved... then once it's complete and replicated (as required) log in again; the problem should be gone.

I tried this, with two users, to no avail. Any other suggestions? Does anybody else get this error with Exchange 2007?

I don't know if it applies to Ex2k7 but this seems to have worked for another user...

The resolution for this is simple:

Make sure there is a DNS record for "autodiscover.yourdomain.com" pointing to your client access server. That resolves the issue and Outlook should download the OAB. Apparently this is by design and Exchange now looks in that subdomain of your domain to take advantage of the web distribution feature.

But this brings another issue.. What if it is not possible to create the DNS record, or you are hosting an SMTP address which you do not own and therefore cannot create the DNS record for the domain? Does anyone know if there is a workaround for this?

Dap does this fix work for Ex 2k3 as well? If so, which server is my "Client Access Server"? (I'm an Exchange n00b)

                    Thanks

On Exchange 2000/2003 these errors are usually caused by a missing replica on the system folder for the Offline Address Book.
Client Access Server is one of the new roles introduced with Exchange 2007, the closest equivalent in Exchange 2003 is a frontend server, but that isn't a 100% match as things have changed.

I understand that there is a blog posting being worked on for the offline address book errors in Exchange 2007, but I have no idea when it will be published.

                      Simon.
