    Hi

The GAL is made up of Exchange entries in the AD, to populate a similar GAL in another installation would require that installation to have similar entries.

However if you are trying to create a copy of one GAL into another install, open up the Address book in the source server and select all using the shift key, and right mouse click and copy to contacts (make sure your contacts folder is empty)

You can then export this to a pst and view it on the new install, create a Public Folder Contact list and move the contacts to this PF which can be added to the serch order in the address book

I hope this is what you are trying to acheive and hope this helps

      Hi Richie,

Thanks for your reply but how i can select the contacts in Exchange Server? Is it in the system Manager or where?

These contacts got them as a .csv file, will I be able to import them?

      Thanks,

If the CSV is formatted right, you can use CSVDE to import the contacts in to your Active Directory. Take a look at KB 327620 - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=327620

If this is something that is going to happen frequently, you might want to look at a system to synchronize users from the other Active Directory as contacts in your Active Directory automatically. I just finished doing a Microsoft IIFP (Identity Integration Feature Pack) deployment for two Active Directories that wanted to do what seems to be the same thing you are doing. It is "free" if you already have Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition and a SQL server and it was not to hard to set up; mostly just had to take the defaults, plus specify a service account and some source and target OUs.

I blogged about my experience with it, if you are interested in checking it out:
        http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com/2...-identity.html

The point that I found was most frustrating was that Microsoft's "walk throughs" were too complex for what I was doing.

Here is the URL if you are interested in learning more: It may wrap.

Well its just a case of which method you want to pursue, Jims option gives it as contacts within AD, where as my way gave you an address book as a public folder.

I suppose its just a case of your requirements and how/if you want to keep updating the list

To answer you question, you select the items from the address book within Outlook client, not ESM

          Good luck

            Hi,

First my suggestion was to use Microsoft IIFP, but the customer afraid in terms of security and TCO.
Richie, i think yours is the customer which they are looking for but the problem is I haven't done this before, would you please give some more technical details on how to accomplish this ?

            Thankx guys for your reply.

              Habibalby

No probs, not sure if this is the "microsoft" way but i find it works.

In an Outlook client on the source exchange install, open up the Address book (little book icon on toolbar)

at this point you can filter out the required items if you have a pre selection setup from ESM, ie all contacts, all users etc.

select them all by selecting top one and holding shift key down and selecting the bottom one, the usual ctrl A does not work

NOTE before this step make sure you contacts folder is empty!!

right mouse click the highlighted items and select copy to personal address book.

The items will then transfer to your contacts folder as contacts.

you now need to export all these entries to a pst which can be physically moved to the target installation

Create a new Public folder as an address book on the target installation, dont forget to set permissions

On the target installation open up an Outlook client and import the contacts folder you exported previously.

Go to contacts and select all, CtrlA does work this time

Right mouse click and move to the public folder.

On the new outlook clients you can add the public folder as a searchable folder in the address book options

These addresses are now available for all to see.

              hope this helps

Re: import GAL into Active Directory from Another Exchnage

                HI Richard,

I really appreciated your workaround for the GAL issue, however, in the organization there are aound 600 clients, you imaging working in all these clients and distrub thier works by copying the contacs from the outlook clients to the public folder which is created in Exchange 2003 ?

I don't think it's a useful way of doing these things in client side. I think is better to find a way that will be done via in the Exchange Server itself and then just instruct the clients on how to go and find the exact contact for the exact company.

Thanks once again for your help.

                BR,

Re: import GAL into Active Directory from Another Exchnage

I don't see how this will disturb anyone. You logon as one user, copy all contacts from the GAL to any personal contact folder, then copy those to a PST, then take the PST to the other company and import it to a PF.

So how's that going to disturb ANYONE?

Forgot about disrubing users, when i go to the Exchange System Manager, I'm not able to see an option to import .pst files to the Public Folder.

Could you guide me please how to do it. The contacts I have them as a .CSV format.

                    Thanks,

You have to import and export data to PST using Outlook.
