Some external receipts donít receive email sent from us

  • Some external receipts donít receive email sent from us

    I recently installed Windows Server 2003 along with Exchange server 2003. All of the recipients can receive and send email however some external recipients don’t receive email sent from us. There is NO NDR which indicates (to me) that the email was sent successfully. Again it's only some external recipients. Any suggestions?

    If it is a new installation there is a chance that your messages are being swallowed by antispam filters.

    Are you sending email out directly or via your ISPs SMTP Server? You might have better success using an SMTP Connector to route through the ISPs SMTP Server.

      Thats what I thought. I do have all mail routed through a bridgehead connection (SMTP Server). I know its working because I can recieve email at my AOL account. (Without the bridgehead connection it would be blocked.)

        As you are routing your email through a smart host, the problem you have is that you are not responsible for delivery of your email. Once it has left you and gone to the smarthost you no longer have any way of tracking the message. It could be anywhere - stuck on an ISPs server somewhere, dropped or blocked.

          Hey Simon:
          First thanks for your input. The odd thing is I had the same email setup last week only this was on Windows Server 2000. I installed a new machine with Windows 2003 and copied (I think) the same settings from Windows Server 2000 over to Windows 2003. Everything works except for some recipients. Now in the W2K environment everything worked great. So Iím wondering if there is a setting I missed in Windows 2003. I know in Windows 2003 there is a LOT more security some of which I had to configure to make a few devices connect that used to work before in W2K with no configuration.

            I would be surprised if there was anything that you had done that would stop the messages from being delivered.

            Turn on Message Tracking if you haven't already, that will show what Exchange is doing with the messages. If the messages are being sent to the smart host then there is very little you can do - other than change smart host.
