  • Exchange and 3rd part mail scanner

I have a www.clarkconnect.com box that I use in my DMZ as a mail scanner. It was configured to collect all email scan and check it then it was left in a POP account so exchange could collect the mail via POP and distribute it to all local users.

This worked fine until I discovered that if an external user sends an email to multiple internal users each use would receive the email multiple times. So an email with 3 internal addresses would be delivered 3 times to each user. This was not ideal.

I then tried to configure it so it would act as a domain forwarder. First I went to exchange and under servers > myserver > Protocols > SMTP I then went to the relay setting under the ACCESS tab and added my clarkconnect IP address. To the list of computers allowed to relay. I entered the IP address of it and clicked DNS LOOKUP. It resolved the name but when I clicked OK I got an error message “The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found” I OK’d back to the main screen and it had added the new relay to the granted list.

When I tried a test mail I got the error that my scanner machine was not allowed to relay. Is there another setting I am missing ?

    Many thanks

I have read the question four times and still cannot work out what you are trying to do.

If this device in your DMZ is scanning email, then email should come in via SMTP to that box, it scans the messages then sends them to the Exchange server.

If you want the box to scan outbound email, then use an SMTP Connector and configure it to use a smart host and enter the IP address (in [ ] ) of the device.

At no point do you need to adjust the relay settings on the Exchange server.

The main problem is that the exchange server is bouncing back the email coming from the CC box. It will not accept any email from it.

      hope this helps you understand

Relay settings would have nothing to do with that.
You may well get "cannot relay" messages, but that doesn't mean the relay settings are wrong, it just means that Exchange isn't accepting the email.

Has the Exchange server been configured to accept email for your domain? Is the domain listed in recipient policy?
