  • Exchange 2003 too secure?

We recently promoted a Windows 2003 Server to a DC on our network, previously we had a Windows 2000 DC runing DNS and Exchange 2000 Srv standard, now the windows 2003 is DC but exchange is still sitting on the Windows 2000 srv which is now a member server. The problem?

All our VPN clients (we use watchguard Firebox 1000) get prompted to enter their password when they try to open outlook, they are granted access when they do provide their passwords, it's just an annoyance and an added step which users have to go through, this never used to happen, everyhtin else as per the VPN is fine- mapped drives are ok, intranet is ok...just outlook, we use outlook 2002. Any ideas welcome, thanks in advance.

You moved the DC 2000 + Exchange 2000 to be a member server?! This isnt supported....

I don't quite know what you mean by 'this isn't supported' as far as I know our Exchange is working ok within the LAN, it's just the VPN users that now require a password to log into outlook. Perhaps if you offer a much clearer explanation....

Did any server with Exchange + DC on it moved to be a member server or/and did you promote Exchange to become a DC?

          Re: Exchange 2003 too secure?

          Here is exactly what happened:

Our domain is spread across three sites:

In Site A we used to have a Windows 2000 Server DC, the same box had Exchange 2000 server + DNS Server.

Just Recently, AD, and DNS was moved to a windows 2003 Server standard. The windows 2000 server was DCpromoed to a member server.

So now our Exchange Server is on a Windows 2000 member server.

This is when our VPN users started getting prompted for a password to use outlook. Everything else is fine, mapped drives, intranet...basically everything else is accessible but this annoying prompt for users to enter in their passwords to use outlook is become a nuisance. By the way they do get access when they enter in their Network password, it's just the added step that is worrying.

We use a Watchguard Firebox 1000 series as our VPN box and it in Site A. I hope I've offered a clearer explanation.

As I said before. You cant move DC + Exchange to a member server.

I am not sure how I can make myself clear enough!!

WE DID NOT MOVE DC PLUS EXCHANGE TO A MEMBER SERVER!!!!

The DC + Exchange was on a Windows 2000 Server, this Server was demoted using DCPROMO. Another Server (Windows 2003 Server) was promoted to DC, the windows 2000 server is still an exchange server. I hope this is a better explanation.

The DC + Exchange was on a Windows 2000 Server, this Server was demoted using DCPROMO = mean that there was Windows 2000 DC with Exchange on it that moved to become a Exchange server without a DC?!
