  • Moving mailboxes does not save space

    Hi all

We have two backend exchange 2003 servers. One is starting to get low on space so i decided to move about 2GB of mailboxes.

But the move has not been reflected is the space used on the drive where the mailboxes are.

Do i have to wait until a full backup is done before they are removed from the source server?

    Thanks

I think you need to do an Offline Defragmentation. While there's actually more space for Exchange to use now that you've moved mailboxes off the store, the store file size, afaik, stays the same until the offline defragmentation.

According to that doc an online defrag happens at 1:00am each day as part of scheduled maintainance. Along with the full backup it seems I now have much more space.

          Thanks for the info Jeremy.

Yes, a full backup clears out all the log files but if you start to run low on space you may still want to do the offline defrag. I don't think, unless it's changed in sp2, that an online defrag will shrink the size of the database files.
            Here's Daniel's article about it.

It does save a little space....

Although online defragmentation provides some additional database space, you should also defragment your Exchange database offline to reduce the physical size of your Exchange database. You can perform offline defragmentation by using the ESE utility (ESEUTIL) while your mailbox stores and public folder stores are offline.
... but an offline defrag is a longer term solution. We are getting new servers in a week or so.... should solve the problem.

Re: Moving mailboxes does not save space

Yup, new servers will do the trick.
I'd hate to beat this one to death but here's an except from http://www.petri.com/defragment_exch..._databases.htm

The defragmentation process provides more database space without actually changing the file size of the database.
