  • Remove Exchange Machine From Domain

    A machine with Win2003R2, Exchange2003...

Once the server is removed from the network is there a way to leave the domain [not rename] without reinstalling windows?

I've forcibly removed Exchange remnants from the server because the installer failed to fully remove it. I've checked AD and the org is gone, but now the option to change the domain on this server is greyed. I've also experimented with "netdom remove servername /domain:domainname" but it seems to be centered around removing the computer account from the domain not unjoining the pc from it.

You'd think this would be easier to accomplish - I know the intention was to keep people from screwing up Exchange but what do you do when the installer crashes while removing it?

    Any ideas?

Note that the change domain option is greyed out even though Exchange has been completely removed.

Any way around this? I'd like to avoid a reinstall.

I found a way around it. Utilizing the NT version of netdom you can add the machine to a workgroup to effectively resolve the issue. It doesn't engage the change button to switch to a domain again so if you need to do that use the W2003 version of netdom and you're set.

        Cheers.
