  • Exchange Active sync device administration - exchange 2003

    Hello,

I have exchange server 2003, where users are accessing mails through their mobile phone devices (iphones, androids etc).

Will I be able to manage these devices (iphones and androids) using exchange active sync web administration tool?

Can you suggest some other better tools?

    Appreciate your suggestions!!!

    Thanks in Advance,

    Sat

Re: Exchange Active sync device administration - exchange 2003

The ActiveSync admin tool for Exchange 2003 is badly named. It can only do one thing - wipe the devices. ActiveSync in Exchange 2003 is very much a verion 1.0

If you want to manage the devices then you have two options.

    1. Upgrade to Exchange 2010. This will allow you to manage the devices more effectively.
    2. Invest in a mobile device management product. There are loads of these on the market. Blackberry Fusion from RIM is free for the product, just the cost of the CALs and fully supports both Andriod and iOS devices.

Considering the age of Exchange 2003, the first thing I would look at is moving off it to Exchange 2010 and see if that version does what you need.

      Thank you very much Simon.

My exchange server upgrade is in pipeline.

Can you name few cost effective active sync admin tools which works with exchange 2003?

My exchange server utilization is almost 90%. Is it possible I can install the active sync admin tool on any other server?

      Thanks in advance,

Re: Exchange Active sync device administration - exchange 2003

The ActiveSync admin tool from Microsoft is so lightweight I wouldn't consider trying to install it anywhere other than the Exchange server. As I wrote above, it only has one function and that is to wipe the devices.

If you have an upgrade of Exchange planned for, then I wouldn't bother with purchasing anything else, but instead accelerate your Exchange server deployment. You may find the functionality in Exchange is enough for you.
