  • 550 Requested action was not taken because this server doesn't handle mail for user

    Hi everyone,

I just signed up to this forum in search to find information and hopefully a solution to non-delivery problem. As there isn't too much relevant or useful information on this error:

550 Requested action was not taken because this server doesn't handle mail for that user.

I am seeing similar problems with several clients but I'd like to discuss one at first.

One side has SBS server 2003 with Exchange. Email goes through MailFoundry (anti-spam) and MX records seem to be fine.
Other side is smaller office and they use SureWest email (pop from Outlook).
The client using SureWest sends and email and receives back the mentioned above error.

They exchanged emails before and often, this problem seems to have started showing recently.

No reconfigurations were made to the Exchange Server. The error seems to be generated by the Exchange Server, but just in case yes the user's email address is added on MailFoundry. And the mailbox is not disabled and receives emails from others as well. Only this client and few others about roughly speaking 5 out of 80 active senders have this problem.

Again searched online can't seem to find the answer. If someone has a solution or at least some good advice I would appreciate it.

It isn't clear who is getting the error and under what circumstances. Are you the recipient of the email that is being rejected, or the sender?

The error is not an Exchange error, so it is being generated by something else.

If the error is being generated by your server does not mean that it is an issue with you - all it means is that the remote server rejected the message at point of delivery, which is best practise.

Primary reason for this kind of failure is the recipient is using multiple MX records or the MX records point to a cluster of servers and one of those servers hasn't been configured correctly.

Or, to put it another way, something that you cannot fix.

The problem is getting it resolved. Most ISP tech support will take one look at the NDR and say it is your problem because your server is listed on the NDR. That is to be expected. ISP Tech Support primary objective is to find something else to blame the problem on, so that they can close the call/ticket as quickly as possible and not make work for themselves. If you aren't the ISP customer though, then there is nothing you can do other than tell the recipient to get on the phone and complain.

      Simon,

      Thanks for the response.

Well yes the server is mine (well my client's). When a person using SureWest email accoutn sends us email he gets the mentioned error message.

The error messages comes up approximately 1 out of 10 times. Meaning that about 9 emails are delivered ok and 1 time it fails.

Our email goes through MailFoundry (spam filtering service) and our MX records point to them then they filter the messages and deliver to our Exchange server. Let me know if that makes sense or not.

And I did contact MailFoundry and the response was this:
      "
      Hi,

The server that syncs the cluster of the hosted system is having some issues so if there is a particular user or users having issues I can check and manually correct if any syncing issue is causing problems.

So it seems like it is a problem on their side and they admit it.

Only thing I don't seem to understand is if their service is not routing email then why does my server still give the error?
You mentioned it is not Exchange error so could you please explain that?
Why would it reject it and why is that best practice?
I understand what you said but not fully and would like to know more details if not too difficult for you to explain further.

I guess it's good news since it's not a problem with my server but at same time hard if I cannot control it and can only wait for ISP or spam filtering service to fix things on their side.

      Thanks.

And I am waiting for MailFoundry to respond with progress/results but if you have anything to add I'd like to know.

          This isn't an Exchange NDR:

550 Requested action was not taken because this server doesn't handle mail for that user.

It is too polite for Exchange. The email doesn't even reach your server.
