  • Exchange 2003 Asking for Username/Password. Domain Network

    Hi All,
I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
Firstly, I made a bit of a rookie move.
Without investigating first, I jumped right in a demoted my Exchange 2003 server that was a Domain Controller/ Global Catalogue back to a member server.
It wasn't until after this that I found Microsoft's KB#822179
    I know... stupid me.

The demotion seemed to be OK apart from some problems with broken OWA that I was able to resolve.

The server is running Server 2003 R2 with SP2
Exchange is Exchange 2003 with SP2
The server is part of an Active Directory Domain.

    But I have another issue.
The computers are directly connected to the network and are a part of the domain.
Since performing this demotion, when users open outlook (2003/2007) they are presented with a prompt for username/password.
Once they enter their details (Which need to include the domain (DOMAIN\username)) Outlook opens and their emails work a desired.

For a new Outlook setup, when entering the exchange details, the wizard continuously prompts for a username password.

I don't have RPC-HTTP configured for these users as there is no need for it as the computers are on the network at all times. It was working happily without it until the demotion.

I'm at a lose as to where I should look to fix this.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Trent

Check where Exchange is looking for GC servers (sorry, can't remember where in ESM that setting is)

      Hmm
If it's under Server properties, Directory Access tab.
I can see the list of GC's and they are all current and no entry of itself in there.

The It's set to automatically discover servers.

So doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary there.

If need be I could always DC promo it again??

        Hi,
I ended up running dcpromo to turn the exchange server back into a DC
This took it back to working order.
I will have to keep it like this until I transition to a newer exchange server.

        Thanks,
        Trent
