  • ActiveSync not working with Exchange 2003

    Hi all,

Running a front-end / back-end setup both with W2K3 and Exchange 2003 SP2. The front-end server was introduced as we were originally having issues getting OMA/ActiveSync to work with OWA, unfortunately I'm still having the same issues getting this to work.

SSL and FBA are enabled on the front-end server with a DigiCert UC SSL cert, and on the back-end I have this disabled and the cert has been removed.

OWA works fine internally and externally (via HTTPS on /exchange), however trying to browse to https ://companyname/oma will prompt me for authentication and then display "A System error has occurred while processing your request"- I also receive "MsExchangeOMA 1503" error in Event Log. Via iPhone or Android it seems to authenticate OK but when trying to connect it just says 'Can't connect to server'

When testing via testexchangeconnectivity .com - I receive error "Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response." - the fixes listed in KB article are not really relevant to fe/be setup and was originally attempted before we introduced the front-end server anyway.

I have tried a variety of fixes posted on the net - rebuilding virtual directories in IIS, adjusting permissions in IIS/ESM, updating and restarting servers, but nothing has given me any luck yet.

Really pulling my hair out over this one! Hoping someone has come across this issue before and has some ideas.

    Thanks.

Moved to Exchange 2003 forum for better response

Is that the full error you get on testexchangeconnectivity.com or is there more detail?

Re: ActiveSync not working with Exchange 2003

Primary reason why FE/BE doesn't work is the patch levels are different.
The frontend needs to be the same or higher than the backend. Due to a quirk with Exchange service packs, if you went through Exchange 2003 SP1, then SP2 on the backend, then you need to do the same with the frontend. A few bits were missed from SP2 that were in SP1.

Are you or were you using forms based authentication on the backend server? That can cause problems and if you didn't undo that correctly then connection can continue to fail.

Re: ActiveSync not working with Exchange 2003

        Thanks for your reply.

The full error from Remote Connectivity Analyzer is:

"Attempting the FolderSync command on the Exchange ActiveSync session.
The test of the FolderSync command failed.
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it

        Additional Details
Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response."

Regarding patching, the FE server was patched straight from Exchange 2003 to SP2, I'm unsure if this was the case for the BE, but I know they're both on SP2 and on the same level - is it worth re-applying these patches? Would this mean having to re-install exchange on the back-end? (I don't want to disturb their current exchange setup as all mailboxes and connectivity is working on the back-end)

Before introducing the back-end server I think FBA was enabled, however I have disabled it since the front-end was introduced - can you please advise correct way to undo FBA correctly? perhaps I've missed something there.

        Thanks again!

Re: ActiveSync not working with Exchange 2003

If you look in the exchweb directory in the Exchange directory structure you will see a list of versions. That list should be identical, with the highest number either the same or higher on the frontend server.

With regards to FBA, if you attempted to use MSKB 817379 then you will need to undo the registry change. I then usually suggest a reset of the Exchange virtual directories. Once the Exchange virtual directories have been reset on the backend server, leave them alone - the default settings are correct for this operation.
