  • Downgrading exchange 2003 enterprise to standard....

    Hello everyone,

One of my clients is using an exchange server 2003 enterprise edition without
any License(Wasn't installed by me ) He want's to purchase a license
but he doesn't really need the Enterprise edition.. (I have no idea why the previous tech installed that...) I was wondering if any of you already had
this problem before or know if it is possible to downgrade from Enterprise to Standard ?

    Thanks,
    J

Without reinstall (Remove Exchange Ent., install Exchange St., restore backup) there other offical support methood. It will be more cheap and pain saver then
    reinstall the server.
The second option is to buy new server hardware, install Exchange St. on it and move the mailboxes and public folder and then demote the old server.

Ok, Lets say that I got a new hardware...

What do you think would be the best way of doing it ?

Option #1:To copy the databases from the old server to the new one,
install the sp, the hotfixes and then run setup /disasterecovery to install
      the std edition ?

Option #2: Back everything up using ntbackup on the old server,
Install the std edition on the new server and then restore the databases
      from backup?

And... One more question about the backup plese... should I use an on-line
      or Off-line backup ?

      Thanks !

You shouldnt copy the database it self... This a common mistake.
You can install new server, move mailbox + public folder to it. Wait a week
and then uninstall the orginal server.

Backup: I like to use offline and online backup. In Exchange 2000/2003 only on line backup get offical support as I know.

          CaptainPC,

I agree with yuval14. You can just add another server to the org. then move the databases to the new server and then remove the enterprise edition after a week.

this is easiler and less painfull

Here's a kbs on your to remove 1st Exchange.

            http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307917

I would be wise to have another exchange and then migrate the mailbox over to the new exchange and then go throught above kb to remove the "enterprise edition"
