  • Rejected outgoing emails

I was recently given valued help here in getting Exchange Server up-and-running for our local Parish Council/Community Centre.

We're left with one little niggle - emails sent to Hotmail accounts are rejected:

<ourparishcouncil.co.uk #5.5.0 smtp;550 DY-001 (SNT0-MC1-F26) Unfortunately, messages from 82.37.nnn.nn weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider. You can tell them that Hotmail does not relay dynamically-assigned IP ranges. You can also refer your provider to http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors.>

We have a dynamic IP address from Virgin.

I've worked out that this is something to do with relaying and authentication but not quite sure how to deal with it

Any pointers would be much appreciated

    Fen

    Re: Rejected outgoing emails

    You have two choices:
    1) Ask virgin for a static IP address
    2) Use a Smarthost to relay outgoing messages (again ask Virgin if they have one)

      Re: Rejected outgoing emails

Thank you very much indeed. Is smtp.virgin.net likely to be a smarthost ? Are there any formalities to be observed in using a smarthost ?
      Thanks again

Quite possibly, and "read the help FAQs"

            Re: Rejected outgoing emails

You'll need to use the smarthost, as Virgin Media historically do not give static IPs.

I'd phone their tech support, as most ISPs require registration before allowing email relay through their smarthost. Can't remember if VM are one of them off the top of my head.

                Re: Rejected outgoing emails

Virgin don't give static IP addresses, even on their business class cable service!
Therefore your only option is to setup the server to route out via their SMTP server.

The last host name that I was aware of that they used was smtp.virginmedia.com
However that might have changed because they are now using the Google Mail platform for their email and I don't know if they are running their own SMTP server. The Google Mail server isn't suitable.
You don't have to register to use their server, it is BT that you have to do that with.

Another option is to use a third party mail hop service. Lots of these around. None free (as spammers would abuse them), so you will have to pay.

                Simon.

                  Re: Rejected outgoing emails

Thank you very much Simon. I've added smtp.blueyonder.co.uk to an Exchange connector and it seems to have solved the problem of rejected messages. Out of politeness I have emailed Virgin asking if their permission is needed but I think it is just a formality
                  Thanks again

                    Re: Rejected outgoing emails

Wasting your time emailing Virgin Support.
At best you will get back "We cannot support that implementation" or it will be simply ignored.

I find it is best to ignore tech support of ISPs unless the connection is down and I can put the blame on them. Primary goal of tech support groups - find something else to blame the problem on.

                      Re: Rejected outgoing emails

You're quite right - no response from Virgin other than "contact us by phone" which usually means a very long wait !
Happily, using smtp.blueyonder.co.uk seems to be working well with all emails in and out being delivered.
                      Thanks again

                        Re: Rejected outgoing emails

You're quite right although they did email me suggesting I ring their support number - a long wait at the best of times !
Happily using smtp.blueyonder.co.uk in a connector seems to be working OK with all emails )in and out) being delivered
Thanks again for your help. As always in these situations you end up learning a little bit more !
