  • mailbox size too large / can't find imported emails

I was hooking up a new computer for someone and tried to import their old archived emails when I got a message about the message store being too large. The import quit and I didn't see any trace of any imported messages so I assumed it rolled back and didn't end up doing anything. However, the user is getting mailbox over the limit emails saying that his mailbox is full. I don't see any signs of the messages that are causing this. From what I can see from an Outlook client on his machine, he has a very minimal amount of actual emails. Where should I be looking for these rogue emails so I can remove them?

    Outlook Client is Outlook 2010
    Exchange Server is Exchange 2003
    Windows 7 Client
    SBS 2003 R2 Server OS

Just noticed that there is a conflict in the Offline Files Sync with archive.pst.tmp.

You shouldn't have a PST file in Offline Files, because you shouldn't store a PST file on a network share.

The import doesn't roll back, so you have a mailbox with some content. Not sure where you got the idea that it rolled back from, there is no indication of that.

Therefore you will have to change the limit on the user's mailbox, wait two hours for that change to be seen by Exchange and repeat the import.
