  • Strange Issue Sending Email

    Hi all,

    We are having a odd issue with clients getting a bounce back message even when replying to a email received.

    The message is below -

    The e-mail address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient moved to a different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the address. Check the address and try again. We are running exchange 2003 enterprise edition. There are no errors in the eventlog at all.

    If you try again it will not bounce back at all and the email sends ok. Has anyone come across this before at all?

    Primary reason for those kinds of messages is that you have an MX record that is pointing to another server, which doesn't recognise the user.

    The NDR means what it says - it means the server the message was delivered to doesn't recognise the recipient. What it does NOT mean is the message was delivered to the correct server.

      Its odd as nothing has changed but we have started to get these more and more, but if you resend it is fine.

      How do I go about troubleshooting it and fixing it?

        Start with verifiying the MX records, PTR, SPF and so on.

        Mxtoolbox is useful for that.

            Hi,

            The tests on the mx records all came back ok, but the exchange connectivity test passed with one warning which was "Attempting to find the SPF record using a DNS TEXT record query.
            ExRCA wasn't able to find the SPF record"

            We are getting this to local address as well...

              You can use MXtoolbox to look at the PTR and SPF as well. There are tools that do that. It may be that an SPF record doesn;t exist. If it does, you need to make sure it references the correct external IPs. Some will allow any IPs listed as a host or MX record to send email as the domain name.

                I have just done an Spf test and it says there isn't one for our domain?

                  Looking at your reported issue, I doubt that would be the factor. Seems a strange one. You only have the one send connector for external mail?

                      Do you use the SMTP virtual server or a separate SMTP connector? Have you tried removing and re-creating the connector or creating another and adjusting the costs, so emails send through another to see if the problem goes?

                      For the issue you mentioned to start with, you could look into creating another SMTP connector with scope assigned to the email address you are sending to and then test to see if you stil ahve the same issue.

                        Thanks, no i haven't tried to remove and re create the SMTP connector but that does seem to be the issue.

                        Not everyone is getting them which is strange, I am wondering if its people on one store as not everyone is having the issue.

                        I will have a look tonight and get back to you with my findings.

                              When there have been intermittent issues such as this type, it sometimes can be. For example, a customer recently had an issue for some users deleting mail form their Inbox and with Out of Office. Not all users were effected. Moving their mailbox to another stroe resolved the issue. I then moved it back to the original store and it was still ok. Only certain users of the original store were effected.

                              Always worth a try.
