  • Outgoing emails issue : 550

    Hi.
We have issue with outgoing email for one of our distribution groups that includes contacts(non-company email addresses).
    Here is an error message:

    GROUP_NAME on 23/03/2011 14:20
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<OURDOMAIN.COM #5.5.0 smtp;550 00.00.00.00 (Companies external IP address) is not allowed to send mail from CUSTOMERDOMAIN.COM>

The error comes when customers send email to distribution group email address and our exchange then fire email to all group members.
Mails to members with company email address delivered fine.
Our exchange server configured to send all outgoing emails to ISP SMTP server.

    Thanks,

That will be antispoofing used by your ISP.

The way that Exchange sends email out via Contacts means that the email appears to be coming from the original recipient, but from your server. If the original sender has antispoofing on their domain, or your ISP requires a list of all domains using their smart host, then the email will get blocked.

Nothing you can do about it, as that is the way Exchange works. Your only option is to use a proper email list package that will change the header in such a way that it isn't spoofing. Lyris is the major player in this market (and also quite expensive). For a small volume/recipient list you might find one of the free options online work.

You could try bypassing your ISP as a smart host, and delivering directly, but there is no guarantee that will work either.

      Thanks you for your answer.
In this case, may be whole process was organised incorrectly?
I mean, that is there another way to reach same functionality?
What I need is that mails sent to distribution group(3 internal company users + 4 external contacts/email addresses) would be delivered to users and contacts.
Can I do same other way than adding contacts to group? Forwarding or something?

      Thanks.

What you did wasn't incorrect. However it is just that the way that Exchange does the forwarding is now unacceptable to many sites on the Internet in the ongoing war on spam.

The only options if you must do it are what I have already outlined. I wouldn't want to use forwarding on a mailbox to achieve the same thing because of the risk of loops.
