  • Mail size limits exceeded - Exchange 2003

Problem is basically we can't receive mails exceeding 10mb externally. We're using Exchange 2003 in a Windows Server 2003 Standard. I'm aware of all the places in the Exchange admin console that can set limits, but i believe i've set them all and it's still happening. Take a look.

Global Settings -> Message Delivery Properties -> Defaults

Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties -> Messages

Routing group -> Connector properties -> Content Restrictions

Active Directory Users and Computers -> User properties -> Delivery Restrictions

As you can see, every limit is ok. I'm testing sending an e-mail from my personal GMail to my company mail with an attachment of 18mb, and i'm receiving the following NDR:

    Code:

Is there anywhere else I could check in my Exchange Server? I've tested sending this same mail from my company mail to my GMail, and it works just fine.

    Thanks!

Re: Mail size limits exceeded - Exchange 2003

When did you make the change? Exchange won't see the new limit immediately. You can verify what limit the SMTP connector of the Exchange server is currently using by establishing a telnet session to port 25 of the server and sending the EHLO command.

It's been a couple of hours now. When I telnet there, i get an error using EHLO:

Is there a firewall between you and the server? If so, try telnet directly from the server.

I've tried both, from home (externally) and from the office (internally). I get the same error.

Have you tried it directly from the server?

Re: Mail size limits exceeded - Exchange 2003

OK, the SMTP connector on Exchange says it's size limit is 40MB (roughly).

In addition, you don't have to do the conversion using 1024 bytes when configuring the limits, Exchange will do that. So if you want the size limit to be 40MB set it to 40000 and Exchange will "convert" it to 40960000 bytes.

Re: Mail size limits exceeded - Exchange 2003

I'm not doing any conversion. Those 40mb are configured in the Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties -> Messages option.

Still... if the limit is 40mb, why would a 18mb mail get refused?

Also, thanks so far for your help!

Re: Mail size limits exceeded - Exchange 2003

                    Hi.

if you want to receive email of size 20mb. Then you need to set the limit to 20MB + 33% of 20MB which is 26.6.

The reason is the exchange advance queueing engine, during content conversion phase the message gets expanded to 33%

so if you do maths with you 18mb attachment it comes out to be 22.6mb. Seems like that's why it's failing to get thru
                    Thanks & Regards

Re: Mail size limits exceeded - Exchange 2003

                      Ok, so, now I have:

Global Settings -> Message Delivery Properties -> Defaults: No limit
Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties -> Messages: Still 40mb
Routing group -> Connector properties -> Content Restrictions: Still unchecked
Active Directory Users and Computers -> User properties -> Delivery Restrictions: Use Default Limit

Considering this parameters, limit should be just 40mb. But when i try again sending a mail with a 18mb attachment from Gmail to my company mail, i get an NDR saying:

                      Code:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

                      Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected]
                      Action: failed
                      Status: 5.2.3
                      X-Display-Name: My Name
                      Any thoughts?

What I meant is that you entered 40960 because that's equal to 40 MB, but what Exchange does is to take the value you enter and multiply it by 1024 so you end up with 40960 x 1024 = 41943040 (40.96MB). What you should enter is 40000 so that Exchange takes 40000 x 1024 = 40960000 (40MB)

                          I understand now. Thanks!

I'll keep that in mind. 40mb is just a random limit I set for testing. Once i'm able to make this work, i'll set a more coherent and thought-thru limit.

In the meantime, i'm stuck with what i posted before.

Hi! check a previous post of mine. I've set up a 40 mb limit and it's still not working with the same attachment in the mail.
