  • Exhcange 2003 / Howto restrict external mail usage!

    Hi all,

    My enviroment:
    Windows 2000 domain
    Exchange 2003 Frontend / Backend

    Question:

I would like to restrict the use of email on certain accounts.
These account should be able to send email to internal users but not to external users.
Can somone tell how to implement this with least administrative effort?

    Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Re: Exhcange 2003 / Howto restrict external mail usage!

I have never tried this so if it doesn't work then don't shoot me down in flames.

Put the users that you wish to stop sending e-mail external into a group and i think you will need to mail enable it (someone can correct me if i'm wrong)
    Open up ESM.
Go to Administrative Groups, Your site name.
Browse down to Routing Groups and open until you reach your Internet Mail Connector.
Right click on your mail connector and select properties.
Under the reject messages from click on add.
Add the group you wish to stop sending mail.

Now this may or may not work and would be best tried on a test user and group in a test enviornment prior to you enabling it live on your production server.

As i also said i could be way off the mark here, as i have never had the need to do it, so if someone else knows better then please do so.

Re: Exhcange 2003 / Howto restrict external mail usage!

One thing you could do is to give those users only a X400 mail address and remove their SMTP address. They will be able to communicate internally but not externally.

If you are going to use a group for the restrictions you must also edit the Registry to enable this feature, look at

XCON: Connector Delivery Restrictions May Not Work Correctly:
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/277872

        and

XCON: Restriction Settings Are Not Applied After Configuring the Delivery Restrictions Option:
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279813

for the necessary Registry changes you must make.

One of the nicest articles about this is:

Restricting Users from Sending and/or Receiving Mail via the Internet:

            Nice tips Daniel.

I'll need to remember those in future.

Reading the articles though it basically uses what i said to do but to enable the restrictions checking in the registry. Is this correct??

Unfortunatly i can not delete the SMTP addres off a user.
(Its the primary mail address and can not be removed)
                Any Help please?

Re: Exhcange 2003 / Howto restrict external mail usage!

                    No i did not.
There is to much impact on the structure.
So the sugestion to use only X400 address is not going to work?

                    Thanks,

I don't get it. You said all works fine, why re-open the thread?

                        Daniel,
                        Sorry you are right!

I just wanted to try the other option to.
I would like to make this work in another domain with just the use off X400.
But can not delete SMTP address because it is Primary.

I think the options you gave me work just fine in my big enviroment.
And it gives me good overview of internal mail users because off the mail enabled group, works perfectly.

I should have been more clear about the small domain for which i now try to make this work with just X400 address, still no luck.
