  • Migrating to new server

    Hi,

I am migrating our Exchange server to another machine. I have been through the following doc; support.microsoft.com/kb/822931
Changed my connectors to use the new server on the new machine, migrated most of the mailboxes. The old server that I want to switch off is a 'member' and the new server is now the 'master'. I switch off the old server (member) and log on to a mailbox which is on the new server - however Outlook hangs on looking for the old server?! I don't understand that - I was expecting it to be ok as the account has migrated.

Do I actually need to migrate all mailboxes? Delete the member from ESM? Actually uninstall the old server (member)?

    Much appreciated

    Re: Migrating to new server

Have you replicated all of the system and public folders?

My guide is a little more comprehensive.

However you will have to uninstall Exchange on the original server. You cannot just turn the machine off.

    Simon.

We have double checked everything in support.microsoft.com/kb/822931

I will check out your guide.

      Thanks

        Re: Migrating to new server

In fact we have gone to uninstall the old Exchange and it won't because it still thinks there are mailboxes residing when in fact they are all now migrated.

We have run mailbox clean up and rebooted. The only items left in the Mailboxes on the old Exchange server are the default objects; 'SMTP.....' and 'Default......'.

        Any ideas?
        Thanks

          Re: Migrating to new server

You have made the common mistake of thinking that all mailboxes appear in ESM. They don't. Exchange only creates mailboxes when they are required. Therefore it is possible for a mailbox to be located on a server, but not appear in ESM.

My guide that I linked to above goes through this.
