  • Outlook disonnects when Organisational master goes down

    Server 2003 and Exchange 2003

in a test lab We have an Exchange Organisation which spreads over multiple domains

The forest root domain has the exchange organisation master server

I have two other domains ( these are not child domains but new tree domains)
Each Domain has its own DC and Exchange server

Email routes between the organisation fine until i drop the connection with the Organisation Master. i am dropping the connection to the virtual switch for testing

Outlook clients become disconnected from their exchange server
From the client i can ping the exchange server and dc in its own domain and the DC and Exchange server in the other domain (not the organisational master though as i have disconnected it)

If the Organisation Master Exchange server goes offline - should email work between other Exchange servers?

    Thanks

Re: Outlook disconnects when Organisational master goes down

    Organisation Master?
No such thing in Exchange. All Exchange servers are equal. The only thing that Exchange has that is "master" is routing master, and that plays no part in the Exchange/Outlook connection.

The only reason that losing the connection to an Exchange would cause a problem is if Exchange is installed on a DC. When Exchange is installed on a DC, all other Exchange servers in the Exchange org will only use that DC for their domain functionality. In a multiple server environment (the domains Exchange doesn't care about) it is vital that Exchange is not installed on a DC anywhere.

Re: Outlook disonnects when Organisational master goes down

I basically have a forest root domain - with a dc, exchange server and client. and two domains in new trees with dc, exchange and client in each.

I want to make sure that if the forest root domain becomes unaveilable that inta domain email works and that email between the two tree domains also works

        thanks

Re: Outlook disonnects when Organisational master goes down

do you have GCs in each site, or on each domain controller?

If your server you're knocking offline is the Global Catalog (and no others exist) then it's definitely going to fail as it needs to look up stuff.

GCs and DNS are the most likely reasons outlook won't be able to connect to exchange

Re: Outlook disonnects when Organisational master goes down

Each DC in each Domain is a GC

So there are GC's up in both Tree Domains

I have a Virtual Router connecting the Forest root domain to the two tree domains - when i drop the connection to the forest root - Both Outlook clients become disconnected in each domain

Im not sure why they would do this as their Exchange server (in their domain) is online and pingable

                Hi,

Does it ever work for you?
Can you check with OWA if you are able to access mailbox?
and if you can provide your exchange and Directory Services Network Diagram
                Thanks & Regards

Re: Outlook disonnects when Organisational master goes down

                  Hi

Outlook clients have the DNS Server in their domain set as their only DNS Server

                  The design is:

                  Single Forest
I have a Forest root DC and Exchange server connected to a Virtual Switch
This Switch is connected to a Virtual Router which connects to another switch

The two Tree domains are on their own Virtual switch but connect to the same Virtual router
For testing I am disconnecting the the router connection from this router to the Switch - shown in Red on the diagram (the diagram was knocked up very quickly - sorry)

                  I will check OWA now

Re: Outlook disonnects when Organisational master goes down

A quick question - when in ESM and right clicking on the Exchange server in one of the TRee nodes, under Directory Access it is only showing the Forest root DC and GC not any others in the forest

this is the Automaticall discover option - should i add in the other servers manually? could this be causing the prolems?
