I came across this article, but will this resolve it? I would think it has something to do with the backup software correct?

    You have missing log file.
That is usually caused by AV scanning something it shouldn't be. The procedure in that KB article will get you running again, but you should also ensure that any AV software is not scanning the Exchange directories, particularly the location of the logs and the databases.

I did uncheck the Exchange directories in Symantec. Any precautions i need to take when following the steps in this KB?

There are more exclusions required than just the Exchange directories in Exchange 2003, check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823166.

Symantec is notorious for doing this. I have actually acquired two clients who came to me because Symantec had caused problems. I removed the Symantec product and the problems went away. My stance on Symantec's AV and associated products is nothing new. I operate a simple policy - where Symantec is installed, it is the cause of the problem.

As long as you follow the instructions carefully you should be fine.

So i have a question regarding the Exchange database. Currently this is all we back up. We do not do a brick level backup of the mailboxes. So that being said, if i am just backing up the database what does this allow me to restore?

If you are doing a complete information store backup, then you can restore the entire information store. You do not need to do any kind of mailbox or brick level backup to have a complete backup of all Exchange data.

Well i ran a backup using NTbackup on Friday of the Exchange DB and it completed just fine.

So i think the issue maybe with CA Arcserve.

I ran Arcserve for years and recently switched to NTBackup. Its free, its fast, and it does exactly what you need it to do...backup the Information Stores. I couldn't be happier that I don't have to deal with Arcserve any more.
