  • Random domain name in Queues list

    Hi all,

I was browsing these Exchange forums today with mind to posting about Issue 2, however I got sidetracked and followed part of a guide about Spam and it led me to open my Server's "Queues" window. Upon opening, I found an entry for "mutfaksan.com" in the list - I was immediately suspicious, and so googled the domain and it is indeed what looks to be a business website - which is not mine in any shape or form.

I was wondering how this could have been created on my Server? There are no messages in the queue (due to my Server not being an OR?) and I do not myself know how to create these queues, so is it possible my Server has been hacked into using Remote Desktop? I have frozen the queue, although there doesn't seem to have been any activity on it.

    Thanks,

    Karl

It's an outbound email queue. Someone in your organization has sent an email to that domain. Exchange Server creates outbound queues when it attempts to send outbound email.

Intriguing - considering I'm the only user to have an email account on the Server, I've never sent an email to that domain! Makes me wonder about the security of my Server...

is the queue still there ?

maybe you've been the target of spam, and your mailserver is trying to return NDR emails to the source address ? (faked, or otherwise)

Yeah, the queue is still listed, but it has 0 messages and I've "Frozen" it. Do they time out after a while then?

I do get the odd small barrage of Spam, in fits and starts but the Outlook Junk Filter catches most of it - unfortunately it still gets pushed to my mobile.

Do you have recipient filtering enabled?
If not, then Exchange will accept all email sent to your email and then attempt to bounce it back and those will show in the queue.
If you have recipient filtering enabled then the messages are rejected at the point of delivery.

              Hi Simon,

I don't have Recipient Filtering enabled, however having looked at those filters I have now enabled the Sender Filtering and added some addresses as well as *@*.ru (Most of the Spam I have been receiving has been from a .ru address, although I am not sure how effective this addition will be) - I have not enabled Recipient Filtering as I have to say I was expecting to see "Block all except the list below" or such, where I could just add my email address and all other mail to erroneous inboxes on my domain would be blocked also.

Recipient filtering is what you need to enable. Sender filtering is usually close to useless, particularly for spam fighting.

I've had a play with some of the Filters and the spam seems to have subsided, especially on my Mobile

                  Cheers!
