    So much detail given...

    Exchange version, edition, service pack?

Windows Server version, edition, service pack?

What have you tried so far?

Maybe have a read - people will feel more inclined to help if they don't have to play a guessing game.

sorry guys, was typing this when it was (still is) quite late.

      windows 2003 server SP2
      exchange 2003 SP2

had to reboot because of power issues is building.

now this is the second time i have rebooted it, and on both occasions
old mail from a few months back processes and i end up with 80mb NDR emails.

these email that are backdated cause major dramas in the office between staff and other companies.

i havent tried anything, dont even know where to start.

These "power issues", are you shutting the server down cleanly, or is the power going out suddenly?

          Sounds like the greylisting bug.
I have also seen it where a smart host is involved or AV is configured incorrectly and is hanging on to the messages.

          Greylisting bug:
          http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950757/

For AV, ensure that any file system AV is not scanning the Exchange directory structure.
