  • How to Uninstall Exchange 6.5?

    Hi,

We recently purchased a new server to replace our old Server 2003 DC (Server2k3). We installed Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition (Server2k8 ) on new machine then carried out all steps to include it as a Member server then make it as a primary server by transferring 5 FSMO roles as per this MS KB article. We haven't yet done demote of old DC.

On the old server we also had Microsoft Exchange 6.5 running locally which we didn't use much and now we plan to install Exchange 2007 SP1 as a fresh installation on the new machine.

Before we do the Exchange 2007 installation, we would like to know if it's required to uninstall Exchange 6.5 from old DC? If so then how to do so? We tried to do it from Add/Remove programs but the options are disabled. What is the right approach for proper un-installation?

    Thanks and Regards,

Re: How to Uninstall Exchange 6.5?

Exchange 2003 isn't like a regular application, which you can just remove. It is heavily integrated in to Active Directory. As such, unless you have mail disabled all users and removed public folders then you will be unable to uninstall it.

Your best option would be to install Exchange 2007 SP2 (why start with SP1) and then carry out a standard migration of the Exchange settings using the Technet guides.

Otherwise you will have to start up Exchange and then go through its complete removal, again using the guides on Technet and the Microsoft Knowledge base in order to remove it.

    You cannot just remove/abandon Exchange.

      Hi Sembee,

Thanks for your response and clarification. But, I thought migration is only possible if installing latest software on top of the same server but in my case I have a new server on which I would like to have Exchange installed. Could you please clarify this? And, I would appreciate if you could please provide the links to the Technet guides for migration and removal?

Regarding Exchange 2007 SP2, we are Microsoft Partner and we don't see this version yet in our software downloads section

      Regards,

Re: How to Uninstall Exchange 6.5?

There are no in-place upgrade options for Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.
Exchange 2003 is 32 bit, Exchange 2007 is 64 bit. Therefore the only option is a migration, also known as a swing migration.

As for service Packs - the Exchange server packs are the complete product. Just download Exchange 2007 SP2 from the public Microsoft site and you can install from that. When an Exchange 2007 service pack is installed it effectively removes and reinstalls the product.
