  • Exchange 2003 Priv1.stm file size

If the size of the priv1.edb and particularly the priv1.stm file doesn't change after a drefrag, then there wasn't any recoverable space in the file.

Specifically I have noted that the Priv1.stm is rather large in comparrision to the Priv.edb. This is an explanation i received.

The Priv1.stm is a streaming file that contains multi-media data that is formatted as MIME data. Exchange utilizes what Microsoft terms a single-instance message store. This single-instance message store works on a per database basis. What does this mean? If an e-mail message is sent to multiple mailboxes that are all in the same database, the message is stored once and each mailbox has a pointer to the message. So, if there are multiple users with emails with the same large attachment, only when ALL users delete that email would Exchange completely delete it (remove it from .stm file) resulting in space that could be recovered from the .stm file

OK, sorry -- we're so used to questions here that anything that isn't one is a bit of a surprise

With all due respect, an offline defrag is not something that has to be done, or should be done regularly. It is well documented how you can estimate the space to be gained, and unless you have removed a large amount of data from the store, the gain will be limited.

Furthermore, I haven't done an offline defrag on Exchange 2003 since SP2 was released. I simply cannot justify the downtime or the risk to the data. An offline defrag is not risk free.

I don't really see the point in this thread and am in two minds whether to remove it.
