  • 554 5.7.1: Relay Access Denied

    Hi Guys,

I have a SBS 2003 server running Exchange 2003 SP2. They had been having a number of issues with their broadband provider Nildram, and we have now moved them over to BT. They use MX records on the domain hosted by Nildram pointing to the Anti Spam solution Mail Distiller.

Since these changes they seem to be receiving the following error:

You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator.
    <server.domain.local #5.7.1 smtp;554 5.7.1 <[email protected]>: Relay access denied

It isn't happening all of the time, just randomly with different users.

Any ideas what to check settings wise??

In short there e-mail setup is:

PC -> Exchange Server -> SMTP (outbound.maildistiller.com) -> BT Router

    Cheers, Phill.

First thing to check is whether there is a smart host configured in th SMTP Connector. If there is, check it is still valid.

It isn't clear what "SMTP (outbound.maildistiller.com)" is. Another SMTP server?
If it is another SMTP server then the problem would seem to point to that as being the cause, given the error is being generated at the transfer between those two servers.

At current there is no Smart Host configured - SMTP Virtual Server

The fully qualified domain is their local address (server.domain.local) - SMTP Virtual Server

The only SMTP connector is set to "forward all mail through this connector to the following smart host: outbound.maildistiller.com" -> outbound e-mails are all forwarded through to the Mail Distiller AntiSpam servers and forwarded on from there to the receipient.

In that case my previous response still stands. As your Exchange server is listed in the NDR, the problem is with the filter rejecting the email. That is what you need to look at as the cause of the problem. Nothing to do with Exchange.
