  • Exchange 2003 Routing intersite email via SMTP connector

    Hi

    I have a strange issue...

I have 2 sites each with exchange 2003 servers, 2 routing groups connected via RGCs configured with respective local and remote bridge heads.

When sending from a user in site A to a user in siteB, messages are routed via the RGC between the bridgeheads.

    But...

If for any reason site B's bridgehead cannot be contacted intersite email is sent via SMTP connector to our SMTP relay for delivery to the internet, instead of being queued on the local bridgehead.

    Any ideas???

    Thanks
    Chris

You would have to start looking at a problem with recipient configuration.
Something like the domain not being in recipient policy, which means Exchange doesn't recognise it as internal.
Poorly configured SMTP Connectors - I have seen them with local domains on them.

    Simon.

      Thanks Simon,

I have checked Recipient Policy and the policy with the highest priority has the domain in the emaill addresses (Policy) tab e.g. SMTP @domian.com.

I have one SMTP connector in each RG, both configured the same.
      Forward mail to smart host
Address space - SMTP * Cost 5, scope - Entire Org
Connected Routing Groups - Opposite RG - This could be my problem??!!

I'll do some testing and post back...

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction Simon.

Removed the connected routing groups out of the SMTP connectors and messages started to queue when the other site wasn't available.
