  • My CMS Website cannot send through Exchange

    Hi all,

I have a Webserver with IIS 6.0 and Exchange 2003. My email works fine (In and Out via Outlook), except for through my main website which is running the e107 CMS System. For example under the email settings when I attempt to send a test email to either me[at]domain.com or my personal email me[at]gmail.com, using:

    SMTP Server: 192.168.1.12
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: *********

I get an error saying the email cannot be sent. I have also tried without using the above authentication. I have looked at the SMTPSVC log, but there is no mention of even so much as a connection attempt. Am I looking at the right log?

I don't know if I have missed anything, but I also tried to send using PHP, with the same SMTP server address in the PHP.ini file, as well as the sender address as [email protected], but no joy

I posted ont he e107 forums but there's only one other thread about Exchange and that didn't get any replies, and my thread isn't getting much attention on there - though I guess that's due to it being on Exchange.

Any pointers and help is appreciated

    Thanks

"The email could not be sent. Please review your SMTP settings, or disable SMTP and try again."

Doesn;t really help, hence I didn't post it

        ok cool.. I wasn't sure.
Does your CRM application generate any logs anyway? take a good thorough look.. it seems as if it's not even getting to the smtp service, based on your comment that it's not in the smtpsvc log..

Sorry if we got off on the wrong foot

That's the problem, this CMS (e107) doesn't seem to provide any at all. I've posted on the e107 forum, but they said check the Mailserver logs, and from checking SMTPSVC, it's clean

Re: My CMS Website cannot send through Exchange

If the logs do not show any connection attempt then either the product isn't connecting correctly or something is blocking the traffic. AV for example will do this.
Have you tried sending the email via your ISPs SMTP server?

            Simon.

Re: My CMS Website cannot send through Exchange

Tried to send using my ISP SMTP (which I also actually Smarthost through, come to think of it) and it still fails.

I also disabled my AV (Clamwin) and it failed.

I tested the email function of clamwin, sending as [email protected], sending to [email protected] and [email protected] and both succeeded. Does this help?

              Thanks,

              Karl

Re: My CMS Website cannot send through Exchange

If you are only using ClamAV for AV then that rules that out, as I am not aware that it scans SMTP traffic. McAfee does and will commonly cause this problem.

If it doesn't work with the smarthost either, then that tends to point to the application as being at fault.

Re: My CMS Website cannot send through Exchange

Thanks Simon, that does make sense seeing as everything else I use can send email - including Remotely via RPC!

I've posted these findings on the e107 forum, but I'm not holding out much hope.

EDIT:It seems I've managed to get it working. I messed around with some of the "mail function" settings in PHP.ini and set e107 to send using PHP as opposed to SMTP and its working. I'm guessing the connection was being refused for SMTP by Exchange as a Security measure or such?

One last question, is this way of doing things safe? Eh., Sending through Exchange via PHP?

Thank you sembee and tehcamel, you guys have once again made me feel a lot easier
