  • Frontend/backend, out of office issue

    I have a problem that I can't figure out.

Remote users are using RPC over HTTP for Outlook access. When they try to setup an Out of Office or go to Contacts and choose "All Groups" from the "Show Names from the" drop down they are denied with the message "You are currently working offline"

I've tried creating a new profile and recreating the users OST to no avail. The users send and recieve mail with out any issue so they are working online and Outlook shows to be "connected"

We have 4 exchange servers, each one has a front end and only users on one exchange FE/BE server are effected. I've tried an iisreset then restarting the database server then the front end. Both are 6.5.7638.1.

I'm not skilled in Exchange so I could really use someones guidance.

    Thanks guys

Its not exactly clear what you have.
If you have four Exchange servers and four frontend serves (making eight total) then I suggest that you point the users at another frontend server to see if the problem follows.
If you only have four Exchange servers in total, then it depends if you have all backends or a mixture as to the next move.

Out of the Office is a rule, and is driven through System Folders. Therefore it could be that the the system folders aren't replicating correctly.
If the client machines are Outlook 2007, then it may also be an availability issue. Outlook 2007 is designed to use web services as well as the conventional system for OOTO, but web services requires Exchange 2007. However Outlook 2007 doesn't know that, so in some cases will attempt to use web services, when it shouldn't.

We have 8 Exchange servers (4 FE, 4 DB) and all are 2003. Clients are running Outlook 2003.

I can look into switching them over to a different FE server.

That error would stop Outlook from working completely, not just the failure of one part. It is usually caused by incorrect or missing registry entries on either the Exchange server or the domain controller.

Re: Frontend/backend, out of office issue

The fix for our issue was to remove the server from being a backend server, restart, and reassign backend duties.

All users on this server can now use their OOOa again
