  • MX Record and Smart Host

The question I have is, should our MX record point to our Smart Host IP address or the IP address of our Exchange server 2003? Which one if implemented would we be able to send and receive internal and external emails. Thanks.

It depends on what you are using the Smarthost for.

If you are using it solely as a relay for your external mail then your MXrecord should point to your internal mail server. Actually it should point to your router, then your router should port forward port 25 to your Exchange box.

If you are using the smarthost to scan incoming and outgoing mail for viruses then you should set your MX record to the IP address given to you by you smarthost.

Give us more info and we shall help.

MX should point to the IP of your Exchange server. If pointed at the smart host you'd be unable to receive mail. Smart hosts are generally used to send mail when an ISP blocks port 25.

If you enable a smart host it will be used for external mail. Any message recipients found within the GAL or within your own mail domain will be handled by Exchange as internal.
