  • In ESM: deleted items in mailboxes when there is no deleted items in Outlook

after offline defrag .edb became smaller but still is bigger than total size of mailboxes. When added column Deleted Items in EMS-Mailboxes I see tons of deleted items for users that have 0 deleted items in Outlook. Sure it keeps the db big.
    How to fight with this?
    Thx.

It's probably items in the dumpster. What is the deleted items retention time set to on the mailbox store?

      30 days.
I changed it to 0 in order to flash deleted in retention.
      Doesn't help.
Yes it could be less than 30 days that I started to push people to purge their deleted.
Can I force the purge somehow?

I don't know if the Server level mailbox management process handles the deletion or if the Database level maintenence process handles the deletion but I suspect it's the database maintenence process so you'll probably not see any results until that runs. Assuming you haven't adjusted or disabled it, it should be set to run daily sometime between 1 and 5 AM.

I read that when you apply retention days it take effect in 15 minutes.
So I thought it is the same 15 min after resetting retention days.
I will see in a week because I once a week on this site.

          Thanks.

The new retention settings are applied in 15 minutes, but the deleted items are not purged until the database maintenance process runs. Make sure it's enabled and when you go back in a week you should see a difference.

Re: In ESM: deleted items in mailboxes when there is no deleted items in Outlook

The total of the mailboxes will never equal the size of the store.
This is because ESM is only reporting the data in one of the two database files.
