  • demote AD and Exchange 2003 issue

    hi all

currently we have exchange server 2003 sp2 installed on server that act as DC.
i need to split roles , so it become member server(demote DC).

all take about moving exchange server to new server. this option is not acceptable (require H/W,....)

i need to demote DC, i know that is not supported action, but some talk that exchange server cache current DC at reg and will not autodiscover other DCs after demote the current one,
i think that it's can fixed from reg !!

how can i fix it ?
    thanks to all

You cannot demote a DC with Exchange on it without badly breaking Outlook Web Access. Can you not set up a temporary Exchange server (use a spare workstation), move everything to that, demote and nuke the current exchange server and set it up again? With planning, this can (voice of experience) be done over a weekend.

      Thanks Ossian
But what you mean by “cannot”,
Is it not technical applicable or not supported action?

I mean, if you do it, Outlook Web Access will stop working. (Read the whole sentence)

There is nothing to stop you running DCPROMO on a DC/Exchange box, but if you do, things WILL stop working properly. Therefore the advice from all the experts is "don't do it"

Exchange needs access to a DC, and that DC must also be a GC. If the Exchange server itself is in fact a GC then it won't look anywhere else for AD lookups.

That however is the least of your worries. As Ossian said, it is neither recommended nor supported to demote a DC with Exchange on it and I have never heard of it coming even close to working from those foolish enough to attempt it.

I'd highly recommend Ossian's suggestion of using a workstation as a temporary server and doing it over a weekend. Sembee's guide to swing migration should give you all the info you need on what to do.
