  • Exchange Server 2003 - multiple servers resolving to one name in exchange

I'm working on 5 exchange server 2003 servers in 2003 AD. The mail servers are "mail1", "mail2", ..... I'm trying to figure out how to have them resolve to "Mail." In other words, when a user is setting up a profile in MS Outlook and it asks for an exchange server, rather than the user calling and asking which mail server they are on, they will be just type in "mail" and it will resolve their name.

Can DNS have 1 cname for multiple hosts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No DNS CNAME's dont work like that. There is a simpler solution though. Use Outlook 2007 on the clients. The MAPI profile is created when the user logs on and opens Outlook and is completely seamless. Outlook will talk to the mailbox server with no user intervention required.

scurlaruntings Thank you for the response. We currently do not have the funding to upgrade to Office 2007. Is there anyway in system manager for all mail servers to resolve to one name? Meaning users only type "mail" when they are asked for exchange server, as opposed to typing the whole mailservers name.

The seamless auto configuration of Exchange in Outlook 2007 only works with Exchange 2007, it doesn't work with Exchange 2003.

You can point Outlook at any Exchange server during the setup. Therefore the only way I can think of would be to put a NETBIOS alias on one of the servers.

Maybe you could script the login script to check the mail servers quickly for users who aren't setup yet to see where their located?
