  • e-mail encrypted between orgs exchange 2003

Hopefully this is a easy question for someone.

Is mail between exchange servers within the same organization, encrypted?

    Exchange Org 123
    exchange server A
    exchange server B

user on EXA sends to user on EXB, is that mail encrypted as it travels around?

    Thank you

No, but it is very simple to setup encrypted email if you want to. You'll probably want to use an internal PKI if it is purely for internal email, and Daniel has written a very nice guide on the main Petri site.

      Thanks cruachan,

I think that article is perfect. We have a lot of users that use PKI, cac, certs, digital sig's, etc... just nothing enterprise wide for all e-mail within the org.

Have a look at your PKI and you may well find that you don't have to do any work at all.

One of our customers is looking into secure email solutions and asked me to check their internal setup. Their PKI was already setup to issue User Certificates, which by default can be used for secure email. It was simply a case of the users in question requesting a cert and then ticking the appropriate boxes in Outlook when sending an email.
