  • Exchange 2003 Forest Upgrade

I have a question about Exchange 2003 and Forest Upgrades:

I'm running Exchange 2003 on a Windows Server 2003 system with a Server 2000 Functional Level Forest and Domain, though we have no Server 2000 servers

We are looking at upgrading our DCs and Domain to 2008 but don't want to upgrade our Exchange Server - can we safely run Exchange 2003 on a Server 2003 in a 2008 domain?

Please help! I'm at my wits' end trying to trawl through the mixed, scattered advice online!

    Thanks

You can run Windows 2008 DCs with Exchange 2003 quite happily. You cannot run Exchange 2003 on Windows 2008 though.
You cannot use read only DCs with Exchange 2003 (or any version of Exchange for that matter).

I know Exchange 2003 can support Server 2008 DCs, my concern is if Exchange 2003 will run on Server 2003 with a 2008 AD and Forest Functional Level

      i.e.
      Current:
      AD Functional Level: 2000
      Forest Functional Level: 2000
      Exchange 2003 Server: Server 2003

      Proposed:
      AD Functional Level: 2008
      Forest Functional Level: 2008
      Exchange 2003 Server: Server 2003

I guess my question probably boils down to this:
Will a Server 2003 Member Server running Exchange 2003 (SP2) support a 2008 Active Directory

        Re: Exchange 2003 Forest Upgrade

You gain nothing from going to Windows 2008 forest. The last version where there are any significant gains is Windows 2003 R2. All 2008 mode does is stop older version domain controllers from being added - there are no functionality gains.

Given that there is a reference to Exchange 2003 not installing correctly in a pure Windows 2008 forest, that would tend to indicate that it will work. However it is not something that I have tested. Not one of my clients is at the pure Windows 2008 level at the moment, and will not be for some time.
