How can we know in Exchange Server 2003 that now is time to run offline de-fragmentation ?

Is there any message ID in Event Viewer which can display the status of white space ?

Create a filter for event ID 1221 in the application log on the Exch server. Providing you have mailbox management running on exchange you will see how much white space is available.

As long as online maintenance is completing once every 10 days of so your DB's are in as good a shape as they can be and will write to the whitespace (means db will not grow).

The only reason to ever run an offline defrag is if you need to reclaim the physical drive space back.

Offline defrag is not something that has to be run. It should not be considered routine or regular maintenance. I never offline defrag Exchange 2003 or higher, I haven't done the process for over three years. It is nothing something that you must do.
